What does this mean for you? With 3D imaging we can provide more services without having to refer you outside of the office to see other specialists. 3D imaging allows Dr. Hodgson and Dr. Nabi to visualize nerve position to facilitate safer extractions, especially of impacted wisdom teeth. 3D imaging makes it easier to detect nerve canals in teeth requiring root canals so it’s quicker and easier for us to perform treatment.

3D imaging is especially useful for implant treatment planning allowing us to better detect the density and quality of the jaw bone and the proximity of the sinus – all key factors in implant placement.

Our 3D imaging machine can also be used to take traditional panorex images, and the smaller images similar to those often taken during your routine hygiene visits (bitewing radiographs) with out the need to place the film within the mouth.

Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of the Beastie Boys, passed away at the young age of 47. In 2009, Yauch announced that he felt a lump in his throat but dismissed it as a swollen lymph node. Later, he was diagnosed with a malignancy in his parotid gland that spread to a nearby lymph node. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with a cancer that is very treatable if diagnosed early. This untimely passing is a poignant reminder of the role dental staff play in prevention, not just of caries, but of all head and neck diseases.

Here at Eagle Creek Dental, Drs. Hodgson and Nabi, perform an oral cancer screen as part of every examination. Our hygienists act as our ‘second pair of eyes’ also looking for any changes in the tissues and glands. We also utilize the Velscope as an adjunct to discover any early changes in the underlying tissues. Early detection is key. With a thorough head and neck exam, we have the opportunity to catch problems and perhaps save a patient’s life.

Most pre-cancerous  and cancerous lesions can be completely painless.  Early detection is the key to effective treatment and positive outcomes. If you’re not sure you’re getting an oral cancer exam – ASK for one! At every visit to north Burnaby’s Eagle Creek Dental, your dentist or hygienist will perform an oral cancer screen as part of your routine examination. Any time you have a mouth sore that doesn’t resolve within two weeks, it warrants a follow-up by your dentist.

Oral cancer can occur anywhere in the mouth including the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, the palate or throat. During your dental exam we looks for early signs of cancer and pre-cancerous conditions. We do this using visual and tactile examination and will often employ the assistance of our VELscope light, especially for our clients at higher risk.

What puts you at higher risk of oral cancer?

• history of tobacco use
• alcohol consumption or regular alcohol mouth rinses
• history of cancers
• oral irritations
• HPV
• excessive sun exposure/burn

Become familiar with your mouth. Call your dentist if you notice any of the following:

• White or red patches on the lips or anywhere inside the mouth
• Any sores that bleed easily but don’t heal within three weeks
• Persistent lumps or ulcers
• Unexpected loosening of teeth
• Pain or numbness in the mouth or lips

Our adjunctive VELscope exam is non-invasive, quick, painless and allow us to visualize subcutaneous (beneath the surface) changes in the tissue. When warranted, we will recommend a follow-up visit or biopsy.

Did you know that swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of gum disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems.
