Groundhog day!

Yesterday was Groundhog day! Feb 2nd, the day the ‘fate’ of the winter is decided according to some! The groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as a woodchuck, whistle-pig, or in some areas as a land-beaver, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. Commonly found in North America, groundhogs have four large, chisel-like incisor teeth. Because their teeth grow about 1/16 of an inch every week, groundhogs must spend a lot of time nibbling at trees or roots to wear down their teeth. If they don’t do that, they may jeopardize their own lives!

Now, the groundhog’s teeth have a functional purpose to serve in gathering food and building it’s home. Large, over sized teeth in people, not so much.

If you feel your teeth are disproportionately large talk to the team at Eagle Creek Dental here in North Burnaby. Dr. Nabi or Hodgson will review the options to improve your smile. It never hurts to get a second opinion if you think you have ‘chipmunk’, or ‘groundhog’ teeth! And, cosmetic consultations are FREE – can’t get better than that! Give us a call 604-298-5333.

Traditions you can sink your teeth into

Here at Eagle Creek Dental we love dental trivia and dental humor and enjoy sharing it with our clients. We also enjoy hearing your stories.

Most North Americans are familiar with the tooth fairy. The habit of leaving your teeth for the mythical fairy to exchange for coins, is the habit everywhere.

In the traditional Chinese way, children throw the bottom tooth up onto the roof of the home, and throw the upper tooth down below the foundation, under the bed or in a deep hole (depending on the source your reference). This action is supposed to encourage your teeth to grow straight – like being pulled by the thrown tooth.

Kids in Afghanistan throw their teeth in a mouse or rat hole.  They want the rodent to give them a nice, strong tooth like the ones they have.

Egyptian children wrap their teeth in a tissue and take it outside to throw at the sun, asking the son to take their buffalo tooth and give them a bride’s tooth.  This is similar to most children in middle-eastern countries. They do this hoping that it will give them back a tooth to make their smile brighter!

Lithuanian children keep their teeth as a souvenir.

Children in Nepal are very protective of their lost tooth.  They believe that if a bird sees or eats their tooth, then a new one won’t grow in.

In Turkey parents believe that their child’s lost tooth holds their future.   If they want their child to become a great soccer player, they will bury the tooth in a soccer field.  If they wanted their child to go to dental school then they would bury the child’s tooth around a dental school.

What tooth traditions do you hold true to? Leave a comment, drop in to our north burnaby office and tell us your story or post it on our facebook page.

Minding the Gap?

Where all familiar with ‘famous’ gapped tooth grins. Madonna has one,  David Letterman, Lauren Hutton, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Tyson and Samuel L. Jackson to name a few.

Some are naturally present, often the result of a small muscle that extends on the inner side of the upper lip down to the gum between the teeth called a frenum.

Tongue studs are one cause gap-toothed grins. Apparently, kids like to play with their tongue studs, often pushing the barbell shaped ornaments back and forth against their front teeth. The space between the teeth is called a diastema. Not only can this cause a gap between teeth, but teeth can be fractured by repeatedly clacking the piercing against them, or break a tooth when the piercing gets stuck between teeth while biting down on food.

If you find the space less than attractive or you outgrow the fad and want to close that gap, there are a number of options – orthodontics (Invisalign) , veneers or cosmetic bonding. Depending on the specific circumstance, the treatment proposed will vary, as will the number of teeth affected (requiring treatment).

A consultation with Dr. Sherwin Nabi or Dr. Tim Hodgson, here at north Burnaby’s Eagle Creek Dental will provide you with the answers you need. Give us a call for a FREE consultation, 604-298-5333.

Gingivitis

“If your Dentist comments that you have Acute Gingivitis, he is not complimenting you by saying you have Cute Gums”

Are you a ‘statistic’? As many as three out of four Canadians have gingivitis that could lead to tooth loss.

The symptoms are visible in your bathroom. Signs include red, swollen or tender gums that may bleed even when you brush gently. Danielle, Sandra, Pat and Jyoti, our hygiene team here at north Burnaby’s Eagle Creek Dental Office can help assess your oral health.

Gum inflamation doesn’t stop in your mouth. There is an established, scientific link between your oral health and your overall health. Specific associations have been made between periodontal disease and heart disease, stroke, diabetes and respiratory disease.

The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA)  recommends a simple five-step program for fighting back:

1. Brush your teeth daily.

2. Floss between your teeth to remove plaque.

3. Rinse using an antiseptic mouthwash.

4. Make healthy food choices.

5. Get regular check-ups. Your dentist and/or dental hygienist will diagnose gingivitis, develop a personalized care plan, and evaluate your progress. Why not make your next appointment today—while you still have a fighting chance?

Want to more drop by the office and speak with any member of our team? Schedule an appointment, or simply ask a question by calling 604-298-5333.  Check out the CDHA site or the BCDHA sites.

Happy New Year!

New Year’s is a time for resolutions – healthier living is often at the top of the list. Whether you’re hoping to kick the smoking habit, eat healthier, exercise more or perhaps floss regularly, the effort is definitely worth it.

Share your goals, write them down, break them into smaller goals so that you’ll see success sooner. Most health care goals tie into oral health – surprised? Increasing exercise helps reduce stress which means less clenching and grinding, healthier eating means improved tissue health, immune functioning and a reduction in processed and sugar filled foods. Giving up smoking reduces chemical exposure to the tissue, eliminates damaging heat, reduces stain, improves circulation in the tissues, improves breath odor and improves taste – can’t go wrong when you go healthy.

Research shows that most don’t fulfill their ‘resolutions‘ on the first try. Only 12% actually achieved their goals.  As the old adage goes, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” And, just in case you were wondering, no need to wait until another new year rolls around for that fresh start – today works!

Sadly, most of us spend more time planning our vacations than we do planning our lives. Why is that? A goal is nothing but a dream with a deadline. YOU CAN do it!

Happy New Year to everyone, and if we can support you in any way with your resolutions, let us know, we’re here to help.
